ISIS claims responsibility for the Sayyida Zainab attack in Syria

The terrorist organization ISIS claimed responsibility for an explosive device attack that targeted, on Thursday, the Sayyida Zeinab area in southern Damascus.

At least six people were killed and more than 20 others were wounded on Thursday evening, when an explosive device exploded near the shrine, according to the Syrian authorities.

The Organization said in a statement broadcast on the Telegram application on Friday evening that its fighters “succeeded in breaching the security restrictions” in the area and “were able to park and detonate a booby-trapped motorcycle” Thursday “on a gathering of Shiite pilgrims.”

In recent days, the Syrian authorities have tightened security measures in the Sayyida Zeinab area on the eve of Ashura.

ISIS announced that “another bombing” was carried out by its members last Tuesday, “in the same way, targeting a bus transporting Shiite pilgrims near the same area, and resulted in at least two injuries and the destruction of the bus.”
