India, Bangladesh discuss ways of deepening military, defense relations

India and Bangladesh on Thursday discussed ways of enhancing military and defense cooperation.

The Indian Ministry of Defense said in a statement that Indian Chief of the Army Staff General Manoj Pande and the visiting Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed discussed various issues pertaining to enhancing and strengthening interoperability, training, anti-terrorism collaboration.

They touched upon current bilateral cooperation as part of the comprehensive strategic partnership.

The Bangladeshi official, who started a three-day visit to India today, also met Indian Chief of Defence Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar and Chief of Naval Staff Air Marshal AP Singh in addition to holding discussion with Defence Secretary and the Foreign Secretary. “He was also briefed on the Indian indigenous defence equipment manufacturing eco-system by the Department of Defence Production and the Army Design Bureau,” the statement said.

He is slated to meet civilian leadership as well to discuss avenues for enhancing India-Bangladesh defence relations. India’s military support for Bangladesh started way back in 1971 during the Muslim majority country’s Liberation War. Both the countries are having active engagement on the defence side as both exchange high-level visits and conduct Annual Defence Dialogues by the Defence Secretaries.
