German frigate on its way to the Red Sea — the Navy

The German Navy declared on Monday that the frigate Hamburg headed for the Red Sea to partake in protecting commercial ships and vessels as part of the EU mission in the region.

The navy said in a statement that the frigate had already set sail from Wilhelmsen Port with 240 military personnel on board. It was scheduled to anchor at the Greek island Crete before proceeding to the Red Sea.

Early this year, another German frigate, Hessen, had taken part in the EU military mission in the Red Sea. It remained there for eight weeks before sailing back home.

The EU states’ are involved in a mission in the Red Sea — designed to repel recurring missile and drone attacks by the Houthi militias, entrenched in Yemen.

The Houthis say they are targeting ships destined for the Israeli occupation in retaliation for the aggression on Gaza.
