FM says Egypt keen on enhancing political consultations with Senegal


Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty emphasized Friday 19/7/2024 Egypt’s commitment to enhancing political consultations with Senegal on various peace and security issues in Africa, recognizing Senegal’s important continental role.

Meeting with Senegalese counterpart Aïssata Tall Sall, Abdelatty praised the two countries’ distinguished historical ties, expressing Cairo’s aspiration to strengthen bilateral relations in various fields.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 6th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting that brings together the African Union, the Regional Economic Communities, the Regional Mechanisms and the African Union Member States, hosted by Accra, Ghana.

Abdelatty emphasized the importance of enhancing economic cooperation in different areas, supporting the role of the private sector in increasing trade exchange, and boosting mutual investments between the two countries to maximize the benefits from the establishment of the Egyptian-Senegalese Busine
ss Council.

He also commended the ongoing coordination in multilateral diplomacy, with both countries supporting each other’s candidates for various international and UN positions and having aligned views on regional and continental issues of mutual interest.

The top diplomat praised Senegal’s active participation in various training courses offered by the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development.

The minister affirmed that Egypt is closely monitoring the rapidly evolving situation in the Sahel region, where security conditions continue to deteriorate, violence escalates, and terrorist activities expand.

He highlighted Egypt’s efforts to combat terrorism through training programs to build the institutions of Sahel countries and the continent as a whole, as well as programs to counter extremist ideologies provided by the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development and the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping, and Peacebuilding. These efforts also include promoting moder
ate Islamic values through Al-Azhar missions.

The meeting also touched on the situation in the Horn of Africa, with Abdel Ati reiterating Egypt’s support for achieving security and stability in Somalia.

Additionally, they discussed developments in the Middle East, particularly the Palestinian cause and the ongoing war in Gaza.

The minister reviewed Cairo’s continuous and vigorous efforts, especially regarding the negotiation process for a ceasefire, and Egypt’s leading role in delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza since the beginning of the crisis, including the facilitation of measures to alleviate the suffering of the displaced within the enclave, while holding Israel accountable for obstructing humanitarian aid access.
