Fighting breaks out between Sudanese Army troops, paramilitary forces

Fighting broke out on Saturday between Sudanese Army troops and paramilitary forces, the Rapid Support Forces, in the capital Khartoum and a northern town, the irregular force said in a statement. The rapid force said in a statement that a large force of the army burst into the bases of Suba in Khartoum, besieged the forces inside and launched a wide-scale assault on them with heavy and light amrs.

The statement said that the force command appealed to the regional and international communities to condemn this “coward action.” The local media also reported clashes between the two forces in the northern town of Marwi.

Meanwhile, witnesses said army troops blocked roads and bridges leading to the presidential palace in Khartoum. They stationed armored vehicles and artilley pieces at these locations.

The fighting broke out after tension simmered between the stakeholders of the political conciliation process over various issues, while the paramilitary force deployed at public locations in several regions.

Some of the core thorny issues impeding the process is destiny of the irregulars with plans to merge them into the army and status of officers affiliated to the former regime of the oustex ruler Omar Hassan Al-Bashir.
