Erdogan confirms that if Sweden adheres to its promises made to Turkey, his country will fulfill its promise to Sweden

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed that his country’s parliament’s ratification of Sweden’s membership in NATO is contingent on Stockholm and the West’s commitment to their promises to Ankara.

The Turkish President said in a press statement published here today: “If they adhere to the promises they made, our parliament will also fulfill the promise made (from Ankara) and will take its steps accordingly.”

Erdogan indicated that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held talks with his American counterpart, Anthony Blinken, regarding Sweden’s membership file in NATO.

In response to a question about whether he meant by the promises the issue of supplying Turkey with F-16 fighters, he replied that the United States links this issue to the ratification of Sweden’s membership, and Canada also does the same thing, stressing that Ankara in turn tells them, “If you have Congress, we have our parliament and we cannot ignore it.

He stressed that the decision regarding Sweden’s membership in NATO ultimately rests with the discretion of the Turkish Parliament, which is closely following every development in this regard.
