Developing sustainable aviation fuel contributes to achieving carbon neutrality: General Manager of Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority

Paul Assoumou Koki, General Manager of Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority, underscored the importance of developing, producing and expanding the scope of sustainable aviation fuel, which in turn will contribute to achieving carbon neutrality in the aviation industry by 2050.

In her statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of the third day of the third International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels (CAAF/3), Koki stressed the need of reaching a clear global framework declaration on ways to shift towards alternative fuels and low-carbon fuels in the aviation sector, which contributes to reducing carbon emissions.

Koki explained that the CAAF/3, which is being held in Dubai just days before the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28), is ‘really key’, adding that the conference ‘aims at creating international consensus, under the umbrella of ICAO, on mechanisms for transitioning towards a balanced system for producing av
iation fuel and sustaining the growth of the aviation sector.’

“We are here to develop realistic, implementable plans to reduce the aviation sector’s impacts on climate change for a more sustainable future,” she added.

Koki emphasised the need to accelerate the adoption of sustainable aviation fuel by linking relevant parties from government agencies, the private sector and academics to enhance joint cooperation in order to support the global commitment to reaching net zero emissions in the aviation sector.

The General Manager of the Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority expressed her hope that the Third Aviation and Alternative Fuels Conference will produce a robust framework that can be presented during COP28 to highlight the aviation sector’s drive and high-level coordination to reduce emissions and the repercussions of climate change.

On the cooperation between the UAE and Cameroon in the aviation sector, Koki said that the two countries singed an agreement on air transport services and a Memorandum of Un
derstanding several years ago, noting that this step was important to establish a strong relationship with the UAE.
