China’s Jiangxi speeds up post-storm cleanup, floodwater release from reservoirs

GANZHOU: Local authorities of east China’s Ganzhou City of Jiangxi Province have taken prompt action to deal with aftermath from rounds of heavy rainfalls and severe weather, which caused significant damage to houses and triggered widespread flooding.

According to China Central Television, firefighting and rescue teams have been promptly deployed to carry out post-disaster cleanup efforts. Furthermore, reservoirs have been activated to discharge floodwaters, thereby increasing storage capacity in anticipation of possible heavy rainfall in the future.

On Sunday morning, Zuoxi Village in Chongyi County was hit by strong convective weather, such as strong winds, heavy rains and hails. Several houses were damaged and large vegetable greenhouses were knocked down by hailstones.

Local firefighting and rescue teams rushed to the scene, assisting villagers in debris removal. Powerful winds toppled down trees, prompting firefighters to employ chainsaws to section them and relocate them to safer zones.

To actively
respond to the next round of heavy rainfalls and alleviate the flood control pressure, the floodgates of reservoirs and power stations in Xinfeng County have been opened to release floodwaters to create additional storage capacity.
