China port sees surging export of machines in first half of 2024

A port in east China’s Taicang City has seen surging export of machines and automatic equipment in the first half of 2024.

In the first half of this year, China’s total exports of goods stood at 12.13 trillion yuan (about US$1.66 trillion), up 6.9 percent year-on-year, of which the exports of mechanical and electrical equipment amounted to 7.14 trillion yuan (about US$983 billion), a year-on-year increase of 8.2 percent, accounting for 58.9 percent of the total, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

The Taicang Port, one of China’s eastern ports for export of machines, recently has been busy handling construction machinery products. A local heavy machine manufacturer is delivering 10 gantry cranes to support the construction of a new port in northern Egypt.

Ouyang Mingyue, the project director of the company, told China Central Television that the Egyptian port has ordered nearly 40 machines, and they have also received orders from ports in Turkey, the Middle East and Indonesia.

“Export orders s
eem to have been very good in the past two years, and customer demand for equipment is gradually increasing. We remain in a phase of growth this year compared to last year, with [new orders] increasing by about 10 percent,” he said.

According to company’s management, the growth in new orders has resulted from their technological transformation, with more intelligent products and automated equipment having attracted attention of overseas customers.

“As for our exports, most of our machines have automatic functions. You need to ensure stability in container lifting in unmanned conditions, preventing leaning and overturning,” said Dai Wenxiang, Deputy General Manager of the company.

In the first half of this year, Jiangsu Province, where Taicang Port is located, exported more than 36 billion yuan (about 4.95 billion U.S. dollars) of construction machinery, including excavators, lifts, forklifts, cranes and shield machines, according to customs data.

“In the first half of this year, Taicang Port exported abou
t 60,000 tons of construction machinery, a year-on-year increase of more than 12 percent, mainly exported to Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Italy, Turkey and some other countries and regions. Compared with last year, we’ve seen the addition of over 20 new export destinations including Qatar, Congo, Argentina and other emerging markets in Asia, Africa and Latin America,” said Guo Jian, Deputy Director of the Taicang Customs.
