Al-Sudani directs to raise the level of health and shelter services for inmates in detention centers and prisons


Baghdad, Prime Minister, Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani directed to raise the level of health and shelter services for inmates in detention centers and prisons.

This came while he chaired a meeting to discuss the conditions of prisons, detention and care centres, according to an official statement in the presence of ministers. Interior, Justice, Health, and Advisor to the Prime Minister for Human Rights.’

During the meeting, Al-Sudani listened to a general presentation on the reality of prisons and detention centers, and the level of health services and humanitarian care provided to inmates, convicts, and detainees. Correctional city projects and center reform projects and their implementation aspects were also followed up, in addition to Al-Sudani’s emphasis on following up and taking into consideration everything related to human rights aspects.

He directed “to raise the levels of health service provided to inmates, to continue the process of rehabilitating detention centers and prisons, and to provide complet
e infrastructure, in order to avoid overcrowding and prevent the number of inmates in any center from exceeding the design numbers.”

The statement added, “The legislation related to the management and care of prisons and centers was discussed, and the follow-up to the legislation of the draft law on alternative punishments that the State Council is currently considering, and the follow-up to the implementation and drafting of exchange agreements for the implementation of sentences.”
